One of my friends in middle school was deaf. She was such a sweet girl. She taught me some sign language. Unfortunately, I moved before I could get to know her better.
I know the alphabet and numbers and some words, but that's about it. My high school also offers ASL as a language class. I'm not in the class, but some of my friends are and they teach me some words. I really like learning sign language, especially after meeting my friend in middle school. It makes me wish I took ASL as a class.

I apologize for my ignorance on this subject...You asked whether they spoke or signed and that brought a question to my mind since I had always thought that they only signed...For people who are born without the ability to hear, would it not be difficult to speak if they have never heard it..?? It's really awe-inspiring to me to find out that they can speak also. Tabby, can I worship you? Stick with ur first impression that deaf people only sign. I don't find it awe-inspiring that some deaf people can speak. We tend to call deaf people who can speak hard of hearing and sometimes we are not very nice about that issue. I prefer ASL, save us long and boring speech lessons. Also, we have a long nasty history with oral method *shudders* That's why we hate Alexander Graham Bell. But I like you, Tabby. *grins* Oh, no..I have heard the phrase "hard of hearing" as being used to insult people..that is not good. So I completely understand why you would not like it. A friend of mine recently told me of an ASL class being offered at our university and I certainly plan to look into it. I like you, too, Claira You're absolute awesomeness!

*introduces self* Hiiii Claira, I'm Luana I know a few deaf people at my old school and sometimes I had problems communicating with them as I wasn't so good at sign language but I made good friends with them - just took a bit more time. And I have a question, like you said before you used American Sign Language, do the signs in sign language vary around the world then?

*waves* hi! im alyson! i've actually known a couple deaf people in my life. the first was probably brooke. i met her when she was trying out for my cheerleading team. she could sign and speak a little. were actually still really good friends even though i moved across the country. also, i used to work at a DVD store and a guy came in. he was deaf and couldn't really speak i guess. it seemed hard for him. but he could read lips and then he'd write what he wanted to say to me on paper. he was awesome though. i felt horrible b/c he wrote me once that he used to go to this chain DVD rental place and they would like ignore him and treat him badly and that he was glad to have found us b/c we treated him like a person. it was horrible. my boss had to like physically stop me from going down to that store and killing someone. i work someplace else now and theres a guy named jim that works there. hes deaf. he signs a lot. hes one of my favorite people there b/c he has this laugh that is just amazing. it makes me happier when i hear it, no matter how bad a mood im in. ;D but anyway, that was really long. hope you're enjoying the forum.

Hey, I'm Claira and I'm Deaf. To know me better, read my thread in Newbies. I'm pretty positive that I'm the only Deaf person in this forum, but I'm curious if you guys had any experience with a Deaf person. Also, if you have any question about deafness, you can ask me and I'd try to answer your questions. Feel free asking me anything about deafness. I don't get angry easily, so don't be afraid! I'm a teacher, and I have a student with a hearing impairment in one of my classes. He's very shy about asking for help. I hope he is doing okay.
