Hey Claira! I haven't seen your newbie thread but I hope your adjusting to the forums. We've got some wackos here. (just kidding - but they are kinda crazy). Actually, I have met a deaf person before. I was 8 and I was playing in the park with another kid when I realized he couldn't hear me. But I never saw him again after I went home. He was pretty fun from what I remember. We also have the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind nearby where I live.

Hi, Claira. My best friend's son was born deaf two years ago. I live 2,000 miles away and don't get to see them as much as I'd like, but I know that she's been doing an awesome job with her son. He's a little smarty-pants. He is barely two and already has a 300 world see sign vocab.

Hey Claira! Yeah, I had a friend in 4th grade who was partially deaf and it was sometimes difficult commuincating with her, but she was a sweet girl and I had loads of fun with her.

Hey Claira! First of all, may I compliment you on your nick "QuaackMoo," it made me smile Yes, we do have a few wackos here *coughChriscough* but, really, everyone around here is very friendly and will feel like family to you in no time. You're the first person I am meeting who is deaf *shakes hand* and I look forward to getting to know your sweet self better. I'm an amateur filmmaker/artist...and I've noticed that people who do not have use of one of their senses (I know a few people who are either blind or have lost their ability to speak because of an accident) are capable of creating such beautiful work! And so they are often better artists than those who do have use of all of their senses. I really appreciate your being so welcoming regarding our questions! As I'm known to be a curious cat, I might just take you up on that offer Ooh, and Welcome to the R/E Forum Family!!

Hey Claira!! There are deaf, mute, and blind students at my school. My friends are taking Sign Language and they are teaching me some stuff. You are the 3rd one that I have met before since I had 2 in my class last year.

Eh. I can barely remember if he signed at me or not. Needless to say, I have no idea how to speak sign language.

Hey!! When I was at primary school, my best friend's sister was deaf. He was very sweet and I remember he used earphones and she actually read what the other people said, so we had to speak slowly. Most probably she knew sign language although I dont think she used it with her family. At that time in my school, we had a space after lunch were we could go to learn sign language and at the end of the year we sang a song in a play and we used sign language for the part of the chorus with some deaf people too, it was very nice really!

@ Chris, I lurked here for a long time so I do kinda of know you guys, and I think I've read enough of your comments to determine that you r indeed a bit crazy. This made me giggle (Sorry, Chris! *offers mega-huge Hershey bar). @ Tabby, ooh! You should watch Wayne Betts Jr.'s work! He's Deaf filmmaker and co-founder of Mosdeux. I think if you go to Mosdeux's website, you can see the video of Vital Sign - or do one have to buy the dvd? If not, then check Youtube. If not, let me know. I love his works! His latest one is the Deaf Family which my friend's involved in for it was filmed at my school. its like a comedy about dysfunctional deaf family. Mosdeux website has more information and pictures. @ everyone else, glad you all have met Deaf people before! I'm curious, though. Those deaf people - do they sign? do they speak? I use ASL (American Sign Language), so I was curious if you met a deaf person who use ASL, or do they speak? If have any questions don't hesitate to ask me! That. Is. So. Cool! Thank you for telling me about him, Claira! I will definitely be looking him up and watching his work and will definitely discuss it with you (if that's okay). I apologize for my ignorance on this subject...You asked whether they spoke or signed and that brought a question to my mind since I had always thought that they only signed...For people who are born without the ability to hear, would it not be difficult to speak if they have never heard it..?? It's really awe-inspiring to me to find out that they can speak also.
