I think Jacob just really found her attractive and had a crush on her which eventually evolved to something more. I don't think Bella tried to flaunt around with her image. She was still not over Edward even though she was trying too. Jacob was the only one to console her since their families knew each other well. She just wanted a friend.

Edward NEVER wanted Bella to be a vampire. And you have to remember that Edward is pretty dang old (over 100 years). People back at that time spoke different dialect and had very different taste in music than now. Edward was taught to speak politely and have high vocabulary. He also handles most situations securely. But of course, he has the occasional teenage moment. lol.

And I've never seen why she loves him, it's all awww, he's so sexy, sparkly, and did I mention sparkly? Yeah, it's very shallow.

And I think it's just Meyer projecting onto Edward, that he's the ulitmate perfect boyfriend who speaks sonnets, waits for sex, and acts like a gentleman. Somebody that would make me physically ill.

To me, it's not the fact that they are getting married after 2 years, but that they are pledging eternity together, where you're with that person constantly for billions of years. Um, like, what? I don't care how adult like Meyer says she's like. That's just stupid.

The only problem I had with Twilight was the fact that Bella got everything she wanted in the end. Book three was all about the choices and sacrifices she would have to make if she became a vampire, things such as having children, Jacob, Charlie, Renee, a normal life, constant hunger for blood for a year or more, moving away...but none of those happened, she had Renessme, Jacob then imprinted and so could therefore stay in her life, she didn't have a thirst for blood so could therefore still be near Charlie (not that he wanted to know what was going on anyway) and they got a cute little cottage near the Cullens home. It was way to much of a happy ending for me.

Luana, you perfectly expressed everything I had been feeling about Breaking Dawn but was unable to put into words. *exalts*

I know it's not very popular to compare Twilight to HP, but I'm going to do it. Harry got his happy ending. He got to be with Ginny, have a family, become an auror. But sacrifices were made - Sirius, Dumbledore, Fred, Lupin, Tonks, many others of Harry's friends died to make the happy ending possible.

I thought that was going to happen in the final show down in BD. I expected at least ONE of the Cullens to die and maybe some of the new allies, but only one, small, insignificant character was sacrificed. Bella got off easy, and she got everything she wanted in the process.

Honestly, it doesn't seem fair.

So there I was last night, diligently studying away for my Physics exam (which took place this morning), when I decided to look something up on the internet. Imagine my surprise when I suddenly became exposed to the MASSIVE internet war that I had been so oblivious to: Harry Potter vs. Twilight.

My first reaction was, "You've gotta be kidding me." However, I browsed around on YouTube and realized that both movies were coming out around the same time...And when I read that Eclipse had actually managed to kick Deathly Hallows off the Top-Seller spot, I swear a mini explosion happened somewhere inside of me.

Here's your early TD;DR:
Yes, I have read Harry Potter. Yes, I have read Twilight. Yes, I am biased. Stephenie Meyer’s style is very likeable, I have no arguments against that. Twilight, however, is nothing more than fanfiction in novel form, which is why it sells. (Technically not fanfiction, but it has the exact same qualities – beautiful guy, beautiful girl, danger, girl is useless etc.) Twilight cannot even COMPARE to Harry Potter. Okay, bye.

And what good is a rant without cross-examination? Here goes:

I. IDEA
Both start off on square one here – the idea of witchcraft certainly wasn’t Rowling’s own idea, nor did Meyer invent vampires. So both of them are taking ideas that already exist and changing them to fit their novels. Fair enough.

But seriously. Can the simple, superficial world of Twilight really compare to the complex, beautifully-woven, intricate universe Rowling created for Harry Potter? Rowling did a fantastic job of constructing a totally different world that still managed to fit into the world we know. She really managed to make the wizarding world (fictional as it is) seem as realistic as possible (Chocolate Frogs! Honeydukes! Azkaban! Ministry of Magic!). You could almost BELIEVE that Hogwarts existed.

And now to Twilight. Hmm…okay, we’ve got a fictional town. Many school scenes. Many street scenes. And of course, the clichéd forest scenes. Give me a break. Meyer didn’t do much to recreate the vampire creatures…oh, except to, y’know, amplify their impossibly beauty by another 10000012401340328 times. I dunno, man. I think I’d rather read a book where the main character DOESN’T describe the “impossible beauty” of other characters every three seconds.

II. CHARACTERS
You have no idea how annoyed I was when I saw some videoblog of a girl who said, “I like Harry Potter, y’know, but the characters in Twilight just had so much more depth!”
Depth? Dude, after reading that book over twice, all I gathered was that practically everyone in there was shallower than shallow (and Edward seems like a food-o-phile too). I’m sorry, but these characters do not go through any development. Okay, Ed learns to control his urges for blood. :roll: Brilliant achievement.

I applaud Meyer for not making Bella worse than she is now. She was not a “;popular” girl from the start, something that was good…but then she went into that downward spiral as all marysues do, when she “fell in love with the face of Edward.” PUH-LEEZ. And of course, she gets kidnapped, “sacrifices herself for the well-being of others even though she had absolutely no clue what the hell she was doing”, gets beat-up cuz she’s useless, and ultimately has to be rescued by *gasp* you guessed it! Edward! That was so upredictable, don’t you think so?

I don’t know where to begin for Harry Potter. The series encompasses so many characters…and each one is so distinct. Even the minor characters that only appear a few times per book never disappoint because their personalities were so real. What’s more, the characters really invoked emotion in me while I was reading…I felt like I actually knew that person. Harry interacted with so many people while Twilight focused on Edward and Bella making out. Wonderful. For the characters to come alive like this in Harry Potter is nothing short of miraculous and Twilight, unfortunately, did not have the same ability.

III. PLOT
Good God. I…I really don’t know what to say about Twilight. I don’t know which is more irritating, the fact that a book with such a lousy plot managed to sell so well, or the fact that readers are eating up and claiming that “it’s the best book EVER!”

As mentioned above, Twilght fits the mold for a cliched fanfiction to the brim. This is what annoyed the most…it seems that Meyer deliberately wrote something for fangirls to “OOOH!” over. And it worked. I don’t think it counts as exploitation of the system but honestly, writing this story kinda seemed desperate.

I’m not saying I don’t like romance. Romance is fine and there are many best-selling romantic novels. I’m saying that it pisses me of when people say stuff like, “Harry Potter was good but Twilight is just a lot sexier. ”
Yes. Because filling the book up with repetitive descriptions of someone’s face and writing several kissing/making-out scenes means that this person has talent.
(Hmm, I guess my argument’s changing now…maybe I should have written a rant on Twilight’s fans.)

I didn’t bother reading the sequels to it. I looked up their synopses though – low and behold, Bella falls for another dude. OOOOH, WHO DIDN’T SEE THAT COMING?

Plot-wise, Harry Potter is weak in the general area, the good-vs.-evil theme. However, each novel has its own subplot and it is laid out so well and played through perfectly. Deathly Hallows was probably the only book in the series that had clichéd elements (but, for Rowling’s defense, I must say that when millions of people all over the world start speculating together on forums like Mugglenet.com, some are bound to predict correctly what will happen). Her other books were quite unpredictable and it’s that unpredictability that makes it so enjoyable to read.

Yeeahhh... >< That's me venting my anger when I hear things like, "Meyer's the new Rowling!" (Did I rant about her book "The Host" yet? Please tell me I'm not the only one that sees a connection between that book and the series of Animorphs.)

Well, I guess I'll just wait for the new movie to come out and see which one tops the box-office. I have a bad feeling because Twilight is something "new" while Harry Potter has had a long run and has lost some fans because of the squishing of the storyline to fit into the movie's time (the first two movies were the best!!). On top of that, HP's progress is hindered by the new Dumbledore, who, I'm sure you've noticed, is un-Dumbledore-ish as can be. Who the hell did the casting??

In closing, I just want to say that I'm glad I'm supporting something born from imagination and dedication, rather than something that utilizes aesthetic appeal to get readers.

Thanks for finding that Shlurpie! It sums up my feelings on why Harry Potter is the superior book.

ITA. That's one of the main reasons that got me sucked into this world. It was so magical, and exiciting. Every page just jumped out at me and had me riveted at every twist and turn. And at the same time, it had realism, and was relatable.

Um, I think that those people thinking that this book at all as depth, are fooling themselves. Or they're just too dazzled by Edward's sparkly skin to see otherwise. Honestly, all Bella does is think of how beautiful Edward is, and she didn't even come up with different ways of describing it. And Ed. Deep? Um, no, just no. Just because he broods, doesn't mean that he is complex, interesting, and vibrant.
