Today I attended the Mary Grand-Pre exhibition at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and I learned a lot of facts about the books and illustrations that people might not know! Unfortunately, they were VERY strict about cameras, and we weren't even allowed to have cell phones out at all, so no pictures. There were loads of pencil sketches that Mary did based on the books for Warner Brothers and for possible cover art. Here are some things I saw: -- The original title of SS was "Harry Potter and the School of Magic." --One of the original covers for the first book was Harry peeking out from the trapdoor underneath Fluffy the three-headed dog. Another cover that was considered was Harry catching the snitch in his mouth. --For "Half-Blood Prince," the original cover was Dumbledore and Harry in the boat with the Inferi reaching up to try to grab them. It was very freaky. --One of the covers considered for "Deathly Hallows," which I liked better than the one they ended up using, was Harry walking into the forest with Hogwarts in the distance and his parents' ghostly faces peering from between the trees. -- In a concept drawing of Hogwarts, the Great Hall has a domed ceiling, hence the circular appearance of the room in what ended up being the actual cover art for "Deathly Hallows." I know this was a big scandal when it came out. But I was so excited to see the concept art because it all made sense. Also, in Mary Grand-Pre's mind, Hogwarts has an auditorium! I was cracking up at that. Her attention to detail was amazing. She is a very, very fine artist and it was interesting to see how her style evolved from abstract with bright pastels in the mid-90s to the more realistic, soft lines nowadays. PM me if you want more information about the exhibition. I don't really know where it would go in this forum.

Did you know that Ron is Gryffindor's King and he made Hermione the queen of chess?

Did you know maths?
LOL OK heres the thing:
Each House has 5 female and 5 male students per year.
[eg: at Gryff Ron, Harry, Neville, Seamus and Dean]
So,
10 students x 7 years: its 70 students per house.
theres 4 houses, so 70 x 4: 280 students total at Hogwarts.
So why did JK say once in an interview that there were a 1000 in the school?
I think JK's not good at maths!

Yeah, she said maths was not one of her strong points. And she totally poked fun of herself for coming up with 1000.
