There are so many deaths in the series, but which ones had the most impact on the storyline and which ones do you think, if it never happened, could have been beneficial to either of the characters left alive.

I think that the story would have definitely beed different if James and Lily were alive.
I think it would be very different if the Marauders lived through the whole series.

LOL! It won't be Harry Potter if James and Lily were alive-it would probably be NEVILLE LONGBOTTOM and the Sorcerer's stone.

Of course, after you all nailed it, that if J/L were alive, it would have been Neville Longbottom and the Sorcerer's stone i think Dumbledore's death. If Dumbledore was alive in DH it would have been totally different story...

Definitely, Katie! Also, if Sirius lived through OOTP, things would have probably been a lot different for Harry. Happier maybe?

I think Sirius's death forced Harry to grow up and do what needed to be done in order to defeat Voldemort. That was the turning point in the series, for me. Dumbledore's death was necessary, also, because of the conventions of the epic genre in which JKR was working. (Think Obi-Wan and Luke in "Star Wars.") Harry needed to lose his mentors, so he could come into his own as a hero.

The answer is Voldemort obviously.
